About Born in June, Raised in April

Sitting on a beach at the NJ shore, I had a conversation with my then newly found cousin and was inspired to begin sharing my experiences of adoption and differences of race in a podcast. I would leverage the rich and personal lens of adoption and foster care, to explore the beauty and complexity of our closest, most powerful relationships with our families and ourselves and how those relationships impact our identity and place in the world.

Fun Fact: My mother of origin named me June and my parents of experience named me April, hence, the title “Born in June, Raised in April.” The irony of twice being named after a month and neither being the month I was born, creates the perfect backdrop of the calendar to ground the conversations about family, race, and identity.

I began the podcast with my very personal experiences of adoption and foster care throughout the many days, months and years of my life and then expanded to invite guests into a safe harbor to share their personal experiences.

In 2017 I added the tagline “What Adoption Can Teach the World” to the podcast and began asking guests this question in order to lift up the lessons our experiences of adoption can offer to the world.
